HEAT TRANSFER FLUIDS
Paratherm Corporation
engineers and manufactures non-toxic, non-fouling, high flash
& fire-point and single fluid heat/cool heat transfer
fluids. These durable liquids operate at temperatures from
30°F to film temperatures of 650°F, providing precise,
uniform temperature control in a wide variety of industrial
process applications.

General
Information on Thermal Fluid Systems:
Process temperature requirements make thermal fluid heating
a particularly attractive alternative to steam and high temperature
hot water in many cases. In order to achieve temperatures
over 350°F with a steam system, operating pressures increase
sharply. These high steam pressures result in increased equipment
costs and reduced handling safety. By comparison, thermal
fluid heaters achieve up to 650°F at low pressures, without
all the steam system disadvantages. Typically the only pressure
required is the nominal amount needed to circulate the thermal
fluid through the system. High temperature hot water systems
operate at even higher pressures than steam, with all attendant
costs and risks increased.
Typically, most products cannot be subjected to the risks
of direct heating, which include extremely high flame temperature,
exposure to products of combustion, and uneven heating. Although
direct firing can be a highly effective method of heating
in a process where flame can be tolerated in the presence
of the product, the costs involved in taking the precautions
necessary to make direct firing a tolerable solution are typically
not economically feasible in processes requiring less than
650°F.
For systems operating up to 650°F. the economic and operating
advantages of a Fulton thermal fluid process heat system make
it an alternative that must be considered.

Thermal Fluid
Thermal fluid is not a newcomer in the heat transfer field.
For the last four decades, heat users have been turning to
thermal fluid as an extremely favorable alternative to steam,
high temperature hot water and direct firing heating methods.
Fulton thermal fluid heating systems are often chosen over
steam systems because in many cases Fulton heaters greatly
simplify the heating process, while reducing operational system
costs.
At any temperature of operation, thermal fluid has important
advantages over steam or high temperature hot water as a heat
transfer agent. Reduced equipment requirements, increased
system efficiency, and considerably simpler maintenance procedures
all contribute to the desirability of thermal fluid over steam
or hot water.
For example, condensate return systems, blow down tanks, steam
traps and other steam system accessories are not needed in
the thermal fluid system. The compact Fulton vertical design
also results in an increase in available floor space.
The unique Fulton heater designs contribute a great deal to
the high efficiencies in a thermal fluid system, but higher
thermal fluid system efficiencies are also the result of the
absence of inefficient procedures encountered with steam systems.
For instance, flash loss and blow down loss can amount to
8 - 18% of the energy use in a steam system.
Thermal fluid system maintenance time is significantly less
than that involved with a steam system because thermal fluid
is corrosion resistant, the danger of freezing is not present,
and water treatments are not necessary. System simplicity
is emphasized by the fact that licensed operators are not
usually necessary.
